A Weekly Stewardship Moment: May 10-16th
My spouse is a gardener.  I’m not talking about someone who putters around.  I’m talking about someone who comes out of the yeoman farmer tradition.  His father was a farmer who took seriously his call as a Christian to be a steward of the earth.  Over the years, my spouse and I have had many conversations about our yard and garden.  They usually go something like this.  He says, “I think its time to cut back that bush in the yard.  It needs pruning.”  My response is, “Ouch!  Do you really think that is needed?  Won’t it hurt the plant?”  I have a visceral response to anything being cut.  So when I read this passage about God the faithful steward, the faithful gardener, my visceral response is “ouch”.  I like to think I don’t need any “pruning” but this passage puts me on the spot.  Not only do I need pruning, it is necessary for me to be a healthy, fruitful disciple.

Trinidad Donations of clothes are being collected in the Sundays following Easter. Please bring in gently used or new clothing and place in a box in the Narthex.

Hymnal Giveaway Since we are using Evangelical Lutheran Worship exclusively, old hymnals are available for anyone who desires one. The Lutheran Book of Worship and With One Voice are in separate boxes underneath the bulletin board in the Narthex.  Feel free to take both home!

The Zion Book In November, The Zion Altar Guild sold books that contained photographs and descriptions of various elements of the altar, the stained glass windows and numerous banners.  The books were put together by the Shutterfly Company.  Both 8.5 x 11 and 5 x 7 books were offered to the congregation.  $274.32 was the profit made by the Altar Guild.  This money will be used by Altar Guild to purchase linens and other items needed.  Thank you to those who purchased books and helped to support the activities of the Altar Guild.  If anyone would still like to order a book, please contact Sue Lindsley.

Lutherans Work to Meet the Needs of People in Cuba, Haiti CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Some of the greatest needs in Cuba and Haiti are securing food and clean water for survivors of the 2008 hurricane season, according to Megan Bradfield.  In an effort to respond to the needs of people in the two Caribbean islands, members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) provided funds Sept. 11 to help secure life-sustaining resources.

Through ELCA International Disaster Response, Lutherans provided an initial $25,000 to support immediate relief efforts in Haiti, said Bradfield, associate director for international development and disaster response, ELCA Global Mission.  The funds were sent to the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), which continues to conduct damage assessment and organize hurricane recovery efforts there.
