Rooted in History-Growing in Faith
Since 1874, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has been a place where faith, community, and purpose come together. Founded by a small group of Swedish immigrants in Highwood, many of them craftsmen who helped build the railroads and Fort Sheridan. The congregation began with humble gatherings in homes, united by shared faith and hope for the future.
Â
From those early beginnings, Zion grew alongside the North Shore itself. In 1955, responding to a rapidly expanding community, the congregation boldly stepped forward, relocating to Deerfield and building a new spiritual home rooted in welcome and possibility. Over the years, Zion has continually adapted and expanded, creating spaces for worship, learning, music, and fellowship, always guided by a commitment to inclusion and service.

Our legacy of compassion evolves through modern action. In 2025, we marked the opening of Zion Woods, an innovative residential project featuring eco-friendly, accessible housing situated on our previous parsonage site. This development reflects our mission by providing a nurturing environment where diverse families and people with unique abilities find stability, inclusion, and a connection to the local landscape.
Â
Throughout a century and a half of ministry, Zion has served as a cornerstone of empathy, unity, and deep-seated faith. We maintain that true spiritual growth stems from selfless outreach and justice. Moving forward, our congregation remains dedicated to fostering a more equitable and kind-hearted world by nurturing one connection and one act of grace at a time for all future generations.
The Next Chapter of Zion
The faith and dedication of past generations built the church we cherish today. Their commitment ensured that Zion would be a place where Christ’s love is shared with the community.
Â
Our calling remains clear: Growing in faith to share Christ’s love.Â
Â
At Zion we remain faithful to our mission and welcoming those who are searching for a place to belong. Our next chapter is being written today through the people who gather, serve, and share Christ’s love in this place.
Â
We invite you to be part of that story.....To build new friendships, deepen your faith, and help shape the future of Zion for generations to come.
